FR. JOSÉ ORNELAS CARVALHO IS CONFIRMED AS SUPERIOR GENERAL OF THE PRIESTS OF THE SACRED HEART (DEHONIANS)

Rome, 27 May, 2009 – By a very wide margin, Fr. José Ornelas Carvalho was re-elected to a six year term as Superior General of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Dehoniani). Fr. José was born 55 years ago on the island of Madeira, Portugal and entered the Congregation in 1972 by religious profession. He was ordained priest in 1981. Having a doctorate in Biblical Theology prior to his election as Superior General in 2003, he taught at the Catholic University in Lisbon, Portugal. During the same period he served as Secretary of the Faculty of Theology there and as formation director at the Dehonian Seminary of Alfragide. A great communicator and naturally peace-loving individual, he speaks five languages. Over the past six years, he undertook a number of trips to support the communion existing among the various provinces, regions, and districts spread throughout the world. Fr. José helped redefine and coordinate the program for computerizing the immense archive of writings of Fr. Leo Dehon, Founder, and of the Congregation. Together with his council which will also be elected shortly he has observed the controversy over the beatification of Fr. Dehon which is still lacking its public proclamation.
